Championing impact investment for sustainable rural development

About me

My story

Born in a remote farming village in the northern Philippines, I spent my youth climbing trees and swimming in rivers with my siblings and cousins. My father died when I was young and soon after, my mother left for the UK to support her three young children working as a waitress. I was then raised by my grandparents and extended family. At 17, I joined my mother in the UK and almost immediately started working for British Telecom full time and studied part time. After completing a degree in Financial Economics, I joined Barings as an investment banker in London and Manila before motherhood. When my children were at school, I returned to do a masters and re-entered the workforce as a hotel investment and management consultant.
In my 40s I decided to invest my own capital as an impact angel investor as well as co-founding several startups with the mission to empower and connect the rural poor. I am a passionate advocate of inclusive and sustainable livelihood projects as means to eradicate abject rural poverty. This is the foundation of IISLA Ventures, a UK social enterprise I founded to channel capital for rural development. Today I continue to invest in and mentor social entrepreneurs, and take up advisory roles in NGOs and larger organisations to help steer their strategy to optimise social and environmental impact. My dream is to inspire more people and organisations to create a better world for all.

My Values

My Vision

My vision is to be an inspiration and a conduit for change in every way I can, whilst being compassionate to others and true to myself. I am driven by my passion to help others navigate what often is a challenging journey to effect positive change in our inner and outer world.
