My work is anchored on my passion to be a conduit for change and love of good food and adventure, close connection with nature and my desire to break barriers and transform systems. Unlike many, I also love finance.
My professional background, my personal values and vision guide how I view investment and use my capital. The ‘triple bottom line’ approach in impact investing is the foundation of my investment philosophy and my choices of impact-driven enterprises that I have supported as an angel investor, mentor and leader. Decades in investment banking and global strategic consulting have given me deeper insight and perspective on how capital can drive positive social and environmental change within an organisation.
My personal portfolio as an angel investor includes the award-winning social enterprise, Aduna, which championed the use of an abundant and nutritious African fruit to build a successful UK company focused on healthy, premium food products whilst positively impacting many communities, especially women, in Africa.
Investing in social entrepreneurs and/or impact-driven enterprises in both Europe and Asia has enabled me to understand better the needs beyond capital and mentorship. This experience led me to establish IISLA Ventures, a social enterprise based in London and Manila with the vision of sustainable prosperity for people in least developed nations. Our mission is to improve the lives of people in rural communities and to mitigate migration, all whilst protecting the environment and preserving local culture.
I believe that if more capital is directed to businesses that create sustainable livelihood in remote communities, locals can live their dreams and aspirations without leaving their homes and families and many social and environmental challenges we face today could be avoided, if not eradicated.
My work over the years has given me first hand experience and a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities that are present in developing nations like my home country, the Philippines.
This work includes advising global institutions on how to embed social impact into their strategic plans, as well as volunteering with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that help communities at the bottom of the pyramid.
These experiences coupled with my personal background enable me to see the bigger picture, from the top perspectives of corporate and NGO leaders to the view of people in grassroot communities. Understanding the needs and challenges of various stakeholders in development finance and in corporate social responsibility (CSR) enables me to help design business, finance and systemic interventions or solutions that optimise social and environmental impact for all types of organisations.
